Seicheprey, France- Battle of St. Mihiel
350 soldiers of the 102nd Infantry Regiment held the town of Seicheprey, while the main body of soldiers occupied the Second line of trenches a mile behind the village. This sector was very quit with sporadic artillery and small trench raids. On 20 April 1918 at 3:05am the Germans launched Operation Kirschblute, an artillery birage of high explosive, shrapnel, and gas shells landed behind the town isolating the town from the main American forces. The trenches collapsed, dugouts destroyed, and communication lines were cut. 3,500 German special trained troops ( mortars, Machine gun, Flame Thrower, Storm Troopers ) surrounded the 350 Americans occupying the village. During the battle Father William Farrell the units Chaplin supplied an American artillery Battery when four soldiers were killed. A cook had killed two Germans with a meat cleaver. During the attack Cpl. John S. Petro showed gallantry actions by rescuing a wounded soldier under heavy artillery fire. He was awarded the silver star 14 November 1932 for these actions. He also received the French Croxi de Guerre, actions unknown
